8:30pm show – Honor Cover ($10 suggested admission)

“Searing and haunting, Detroit Music Award winning singer/songwriter Audra Kubat has released 7 albums to critical acclaim in a career that spans over 20 years.   A composer, performer, and educator, Audra’s work has earned her a place in the community as a resource for empowerment through songwriting and music. Her methods of composition articulate grace and uncover hidden places between our dreams and our realities. An offering of stark and beautiful reality that possesses experience yet embraces the whimsical. This is music from the hidden places between our dreams and our realities. She has shared bills with Aimee Mann, Rodriguez, Roberta Flack, Greta Van Fleet, The War and Treaty, Whit Hill, and Jolie Holland, to name a few. Albums to date: Stunning Amazon (1999), Elixir (2000), and Untitled for Now (2003), on Remedy.”
A message from Samantha Cooper: “I was excited to play a show at The Livery in Benton Harbor, MI this Friday, August 06, but I’m calling on Audra Kubat from Detroit, MI to fill my shoes. I’ve been in Minnesota supporting the indigenous led resistance against the line 3 tar sands pipeline. The situation here is dire, so I’m going to stay a little longer and then rest and recover. Please check out Audra’s set’s this Friday at The Livery at 8:30 pm and 10:00 pm – it will be so lovely.
I came back to northern Minnesota on July 20th. It’s been empowering, sobering, challenging and deeply heartbreaking to plug in and see what’s happening here. Enbridge is already responsible for several accidental frac-outs in the river crossings, aka drilling fluid leaks. There have also been scary instances of police intimidation & brutality, along with harassment from pro line 3 locals.
Though this wasn’t uncommon at Standing Rock, last Thursday marked a grave turning point in the movement against line 3 – the police used pepper spray, mace and rubber bullets on people using nonviolent direct action (NVDA) to try and protect treaty rights, clean water and wild rice beds.
There are helpers of all ages gathered here, and the community care game is strong. Despite this, it’s been difficult for me to interface with a greater set of risks, and a deeper well of eco-grief than I’m used to. It’s also clear that they TRULY need more help here on the ground. #CallingTheHelpers
From MN350: “We are under a month away from the estimated completion of major construction for Line 3. Without intervention, we expect Line 3 to be fully operational before the end of the year… Thousands of water protectors from across the country and beyond have spent time on the frontlines, with over 600 arrested or cited” (myself included.)
I will spend most of August in MI facilitating songwriting programs with the Lost Voices org. Because of this, I want to show up in MN a little longer while I still can. If you want to join the frontlines, feel free to DM me to chat. Please check my previous posts for more info, and go here for near and far ways to help: linktr.ee/stopline3
“In June, major banks, such as JPMorgan Chase and Citibank, facilitated $1.5 billion in so-called “sustainability bonds” for Enbridge.” Please join @stopthemoneypipeline on Friday, August 13th by hosting a #defundline3/Expose Greenwashing Day Of Action in your community. They’ll provide folks with training, resources and support to do so. You can also attend their Deadline Glasgow Campaign Kickoff tonight via zoom at 8pm ET / 5pm PT.
